How admission works in India
Every stream fills its seats differently. Here is who runs the process for each one, which exam it uses and what to keep ready. Plain answers, no promises.
Engineering and technology
Sit the entrance exam
Most B.Tech seats are filled on an entrance exam. JEE Main is the national one; JEE Advanced follows it for the IITs. Many states run their own test, and some private universities run theirs.
Register for counselling
JoSAA runs joint counselling for the IITs, NITs, IIITs and the other centrally funded institutes. Each state runs counselling for its own colleges.
Fill and lock choices
List institutes and branches in order of preference before the locking deadline.
Allotment and reporting
Seats are allotted by rank, category and your choices, across several rounds. Report with documents and fees within the dates given.

Qualify NEET UG
NEET UG is the single entrance exam for MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS, BVSc and several allied courses.
Register with MCC and your state
MCC (Medical Counselling Committee, DGHS) fills All India quota seats, and all seats in deemed universities and central institutions such as AIIMS and JIPMER. Each state runs counselling for its state quota, including most private college seats.
Fill choices
List colleges in order of preference, then lock your choices before the deadline.
Allotment and reporting
Seats are allotted by rank, category and quota. Report to the allotted college with documents and fees within the dates given.

Management
Sit the entrance exam
CAT is used by the IIMs and many other schools for MBA and PGDM. Others accept CMAT, MAT, XAT or a state test. BBA admission is often on Class 12 marks or CUET UG.
Apply to each institute
Management admission is institute by institute: there is no single national counselling round. Watch each institute's own calendar.
Shortlist, interview and final offer
Most schools call shortlisted candidates for a written test, group exercise or interview before the offer.

Law
Sit the entrance exam
CLAT is run by the Consortium of National Law Universities for the NLUs. National Law University Delhi runs AILET separately, and many other universities admit through CUET UG or their own test.
Register for counselling
The CLAT Consortium runs centralised allotment for the participating NLUs. Other universities run their own admission.
Allotment and reporting
Seats are allotted by rank, category and your preferences, across several rounds.

Design and architecture
Sit the aptitude test
Design admission runs on an aptitude test such as UCEED, NID DAT or NIFT's entrance. Architecture runs on NATA or JEE Main Paper 2.
Portfolio or studio round
Many design programmes add a studio test or interview after the written round. Check what each institute asks for.
Apply and report
Each institute publishes its own counselling calendar; check the official notification.

Commerce, arts and science
Check whether the university uses CUET UG
CUET UG is used by the central universities and a growing number of state and private ones for B.A., B.Com, B.Sc and BCA. Others still admit on Class 12 marks.
Apply to the university
Admission is university by university, on the merit list each one publishes. There is no single national round.
Merit list and reporting
Cut-offs move between lists. Report within the window the notification gives or the seat lapses.

Quotas, where they exist
State quota and domicile
Most state colleges keep a share of seats for candidates who meet the state's domicile rule. The rule is set by the state, not by the college.
Management quota
Private colleges keep a share of seats as management quota. For NEET UG courses these are still filled on the NEET result, through state counselling in most states, at a higher fee.
NRI quota
Some private colleges and deemed universities reserve NRI quota seats. Sponsorship and document rules are strict and vary by state and college.

- Entrance exam admit card and scorecard
- Class 10 certificate (date of birth proof)
- Class 11 and 12 marksheets and Class 12 pass certificate
- Photo identity proof (Aadhaar, passport or similar)
- Passport-size photographs
- Category, PwD or EWS certificate, if you claim one
- Domicile certificate for a state quota seat
- Allotment letter after seat allotment

Can anyone guarantee a seat?
No. Seats are allotted by the counselling authority or the institute on merit and the rules of each quota. Edu360 helps you understand rounds, quotas and fees and plan your choices. It does not guarantee admission.
What is the difference between MCC and state counselling?
For NEET UG courses, MCC handles All India quota, deemed and central institution seats. States handle their state quota, including most private college seats. You can register for both if you are eligible.
Do all colleges use an entrance exam?
No. Many B.A., B.Com and B.Sc programmes still admit on Class 12 marks, though CUET UG now covers the central universities and a growing number of others. The admission notification on the university's own site is final.
